AUCTION NEWS Our second auction of Orders, Decorations and Medals in 2008 took place on the 24th July, with 545 lots coming under the hammer, realizing a total of £580,709. Included in the sale were three collections, primarily consisting of medals to awarded to the Royal Navy, the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, and the Essex Regiment. Highlights of the sale are as follows: Lot 58 Naval General Service 1793-1840, three clasps, 12 Octr 1798, London 13 March 1806, Off Mardoe 6 July 1812 (B. Hooper, Lieut. R.N.) Lot 292 The Important '1942, Western Desert' Immediate M.M. Group of Seven to Sergeant H. White, One of the Original Members of L Detachment, Later 1st S.A.S. Regiment, Who Served with his Unit with Distinction in Sicily, Italy, Occupied France-as Part of Operation Houndsworth with the Maquis, and Over the Rhine; He was Twice Wounded, the Last Occasion Ending his Pre-War Profession as a Full-Back with West Bromwich Albion. Lot 311 The Superb Great War and Mesopotamia Group of Six to Captain H.J. Brickell, Indian Army, Awarded the Russian Medal of the Order of St. George for Bravery, 2nd Class, For Gallantry on the Western Front as a Sergeant in the 5th Royal Irish Lancers; He Was Later Mentioned in Lieutenant-General J.A.L. Haldane's Despatches For Services with the 80th Carnatic Infantry in Iraq, 1919-20. Estimated at £5,000-7,000, realised £12,750

The 'Great War' C.B., C.V.O. Group of Eleven to Colonel W.N. Lloyd, Royal Horse Artillery, Mentioned in Despatches for the Action at Inyezane, 22.1.1879, Where He Commanded the Guns, and Also for His Part During the Two Month Siege of Eshowe During the Zulu War; Following Service in Egypt and the Sudan He Presented the Mahdi's Captured Standard to Queen Victoria.
A Good '1918 Battle of Amiens' Cavalry D.C.M. Group of Nine to Sergeant H.R. Smith, 5th Dragoon Guards, Who with the Help of Another Trooper Captured 20 Prisoners and 2 Motor Lorries on the First Day of the Battle
A small collection of New Zealand 1845-66 medals, including one dated 1863-1866 to Private W. Biggs, Royal Marines H.M.S. Curacoa, one of only two known with these dates to the Royal Navy. EVENTS ORDERS AND MEDALS SOCIETY OF AMERICA ANNUAL CONVENTION The OMSA Annual Convention, takes place this year in Jacksonville, Florida, between the 14th and 17th August. The Medal Department will, of course, be there, with a selection of Campaign Medals for sale, and we very much look forward to seeing you at some stage during the week, be it to buy, sell, or consign items for auction, or simply just to talk about medals.
