AUCTION NEWS

Our second auction of Orders, Decorations, and Medals in 2008 will take place on 24th July. Cataloguing has now finished, and the proofs are with the printers; we expect that the finished catalogue will be sent out in the next couple of weeks. Regular users of the Spink website will be able to access the catalogue online very soon.

Highlights of the sale include the Important ‘1942, Western Desert’ Immediate M.M. Group of Seven to Sergeant H. White, One of the Original Members of L Detachment, Later 1st S.A.S. Regiment, Who Served with his Unit with Distinction in Sicily, Italy, Occupied France, and Over the Rhine; Wounds Received During Service Ended his Pre-War Profession as a Full-Back with West Bromwich Albion. The Estimate for this group, which includes a number of original documents and cloth insignia, is £24,000-28,000.

Another highlight, and arguably the most ascetically pleasing group in the sale, is the K.C.B. and Army Gold Cross Group of Three to Lieutenant-Colonel Sir John Dyer, Royal Artillery, Who Was Killed Whilst Gallantly Attempting to Save the Lives of Two Ladies in a Run-Away Carriage, 1816. The lot is Estimated at £24,000-28,000.

Other Gallantry Groups of note include the Great War D.S.O. Group of Eight to Lieutenant-Colonel G. Gould, 2nd Lancers (Gardner's Horse), Late East Surrey Regiment, Who Led "The Charge of the 2nd Lancers", Storming Through the Turk Machine Guns 26.9.1918, Estimated at £1,400-1,600; and the Scarce 93rd Highlanders, Crimea D.C.M. Group of Three to Private D. McTavish, Present in 'The Thin Red Line' at the Battle of Balaklava, 25.10.1854, Estimated at £6,000-8,000

Amongst the Campaign Groups and Pairs is the Superb Great War and Mesopotamia Group of Six to Captain H.J. Brickell, Indian Army, Awarded the Russian Medal of the Order of St. George for Bravery, 2nd Class, For Gallantry on the Western Front as a Sergeant in the 5th Royal Irish Lancers; He Was Later Mentioned in Lieutenant-General J.A.L. Haldane's Despatches For Services with the 80th Carnatic Infantry in Iraq, 1919-20. The Group is Estimated at £5,000-7,000.

There is also a strong Indian theme to this sale, and amongst the campaign medals is the Rare Four Clasp Army of India Medal to Lieutenant-General T.P. Smith, Bengal Native Infantry, Who Commanded His Regiment During the First Burma War, Estimated at £8,000-10,000; and an Army of India and Sutlej Medal Pair to Major-General H.J. Wood, [C.B.], Royal Artillery, Who Commanded the 6th Battalion Bengal Field Artillery at the Battle of Sobraon, 10.2.1846, the 'Indian Waterloo', Estimated at £1,700-2,000

We have three specialised collections in this catalogue, the first being the Collection of Naval Awards formed by the Late Lieutenant-Commander A.D. McLauchlan, O.B.E., R.N. The foundation for this collection is a fine run of Naval General Service Medals 1793-1840, featuring no fewer than 27 different clasps.

The second collection, formed by Major (Retd.) R.J.R. Whistler, M.B.E., Late Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, Military Police, and Artists Rifles, features medals awarded to men of these units from the Peninsula to the Second World War. One of the earliest Campaigns commemorated is through the Waterloo Medal to James Wootton, 1st Battalion, 52nd Foot (Oxfordshire Light Infantry), that first appeared on the market exactly 100 years ago when it was sold as part of the celebrated Colonel Murray Collection.

The final collection of the sale, and indeed the largest in terms of the number of lots offered, is the Collection of Orders, Decorations, and Medals, the Property of a Lady. The vast majority of the 150 lots in this collection have an Essex connection, in that the recipient was either born in Essex, or served in one of the Essex Regiments, and obviously in many cases the recipient was both born in and fought for the County and Country. An Outstanding Stretcher Bearer's 1916 'Delville Wood' D.C.M., M.M. Group of Five to Corporal N.W. Bellinger, Essex Regiment, is the star group in this collection, which is Estimated at £1,800-2,200.

Amongst the World Orders, Decorations, and Medals in the sale we are pleased to be able to offer the Important and Well-Documented Group of Orders and Medals Bestowed upon Monsieur L. Hymans, Belgian Politician, Historian, and Journalist, and the Father of the First President of the League of Nations. The Orders offered in this lot include an Early Second Class breast Badge of the Imperial Russian Order of St. Stanislaus, by Johann Wilhelm Keibel, St. Petersburg, dated 1857; a Saxony Order of Albert, Commander's neck Badge; and a Brazilian Order of the Rose, Officer's set of Insignia; together with the recipient’s miniature awards. Perhaps more importantly, however, is the fact that the lot includes a number of bestowal documents, including a letter to the recipient from Prince Orloff, the Russian Ambassador to Belgium, confirming the award of the Order of St. Stanislaus, and a permission to wear certificate from the King of the Belgians.

We are also offering a Scarce and Fine Quality Imperial Russian Order of St. George Second Class neck Badge, by Johann Friedrich Drevsen, St. Petersburg, Estimated at £30,000-50,000.

Our final auction of the year will take place on the 20th November, and we are currently taking consignments for that. More details of some of the lots consigned will appear in our next newsletter.

SELLING MEDALS BY PRIVATE TREATY

Although sale at auction of orders, medals and decorations is very successful, some clients still lean towards sale by private treaty. We at Spink are most interested in the straight purchase of both collections and individual items and will be pleased to discuss such arrangements.

BUYING MEDALS ON THE SPINK WEBSITE
