Items from Royal Philatelic Collection to sell in rarities sale at spink in London

On the 12th of June 2008, Spink will auction a fine selection of rare philatelic items at their London headquarters and are pleased to announce that within the sale there will be 13 duplicate items from the Royal Philatelic Collection. There are a number of enticing items featured including two mint penny black stamps.

This is the second time Spink has been given the great honour of selling Stamps and Covers from the Royal Philatelic Collection. In May of 2001 Spink sold a collection of 192 lots from the Royal Philatelic Collection which resulted in an auction room packed with philatelist enthusiasts.

Note to Editors

The Penny Black is the world’s first adhesive postage stamp. It was issued by the United Kingdom on the 1st of May 1840, although it was not valid for use until the 6th of May. Featured on the stamp is the profile of a 15-year-old Princess Victoria engraved by Charles and Frederick Heath. The stamp was used for just over one year before being switched over to a Penny Red.
