Spink’s Bank Of England Charity Banknote Auction
The charity banknote auction of primarily low-numbered £20 Adam Smith notes, takes place on Friday 12 October in the Conference Centre of the Bank of England. The auction, which is being arranged and conducted by Spink, will take place from 6pm to 8pm, with doors opening at 5.30pm. Announcing the auction in April, Bank of England Governor Mervyn King said the proceeds of the auction will go towards two educational charities: the National Literacy Trust’s Reading Is Fundamental, UK initiative and the Cricket Foundation’s Chance to shine. Included amongst the lots to be auctioned are a £20 note with serial no AA01000007 with Bank of England presentation folder, a selection of £20 notes from AA0100013 onwards and various interesting numbers to suit all collectors’ tastes. Other banknotes of particular interest include some very low serial number Merlyn Lowther £50 notes, matching serial number sets and two complete sheets of the new £20 note. Bidders will need to register with Spink ahead of the auction and details of the registration and bidding process can be obtained by contacting Spink. The auction is open to members of the public but entry will be by catalogue only. Catalogues are available from Spink at a cost of £10 each.
