Banknote enthusiasts gathered Friday night at the Bank of England to take part in an auction of primarily low-numbered £20 Adam Smith notes. The sale saw Barnaby Faull, Spink’s Director of Banknotes, auction over 200 lots on behalf of the Bank of England.
The auction totaled £36,700. Profits from the sale will be donated to two educational charities: the National Literacy Trust’s Reading Is Fundamental, UK initiative and the Cricket Foundation’s Chance to shine.
The highest result in the sale was realized by the first lot, £20 with serial number AA01 000007, which sold for £2100 to an anonymous bidder.
Andrew Bailey the Bank of England Chief Cashier whose signature appears on many of the banknotes auctioned, said, "I am delighted with the outcome of the sale and the opportunity it has given to further the work of two really worthwhile charities."
